Chris Brown needs to be in Therapy, not on Television…

Let me state my bias up front – I am among the many who has NOT forgiven Chris Brown for using his then-girlfriend Rihanna’s face as a punching bag that fateful night in February 2009. Disappointed does not begin to describe how I felt when I heard the news and saw the photos — up until that point I was a HUGE Chris Brown fan, proud owner of both his CDs, which enjoyed heavy rotation both in my truck and on my iPod… But like many, I could not reconcile the image of the sweet, promising young entertainer I’d come to adore with the revelation that he had brutally beaten the woman he claimed to love. I have watched several close friends suffer through physically abusive relationships, and that kind of behavior does not fly with me. Men that hit women do not get a pass. I knew as soon as the news broke that I would never be able to purchase a Chris Brown CD again in good conscience–there is not one part of me that wants to support or silently condone such inexcusable behavior…

Now don’t get me wrong — I believe in second chances, and I also believe that folks can grow, mature, and be rehabilitated. But the most disturbing thing to me about the fall of Chris Brown (and trust me, there are MANY things about this whole situation I find utterly disturbing), is the lack of remorse and self-reflection on Chris’s part, and his blatant unwillingness to take sincere responsibility for what he did. Throughout this whole ordeal, Chris has pouted, made excuses, offered up weak apologies, and most alarmingly, tried to paint himself as the victim in this whole ordeal… Waaaaa, radios aren’t playing my new single… Waaaaaa, people keep bringing up old shit…. Waaaa, the media won’t give me a pass cause I’m black… Waaaa, why can’t we all just move on already…

Cry me a fucking river, Chris. Then go drown yourself in it.

Oh, was that harsh? I’m sorry, I’m stuck on the image of Rihanna’s bloodied face, and the scores of headlines in any given month of women who were killed by abusive husbands, boyfriends, and lovers who learned growing up that it was okay to batter women. And the generation of young girls coming of age right now, who are going to take away from this situation the message that you can overlook domestic violence as long as the guy says he’s sorry. Who cares if he means it or not.

Granted, time has passed… He has completed his community service and stayed out of trouble. There’s a new CD ready for release, and Chris is ready to restart his music career. He even landed a gig on Good Morning America to get the album release some national exposure. But instead of showing up for his interview new and improved, and thankful for the opportunity, he throws a hissy fit because Robin Roberts had the nerve to ask him about the Rihanna incident, goes off on a producer, and throws a chair through a window. Really, Chris? Good to see those court-ordered anger management courses are working for ya.

I have watched almost every interview he’s done post-Rihanna gate, and every single time I am just bothered by the fact that he doesn’t seem to get it.

Recently, Kevin Powell wrote an “Open Letter to Chris Brown“, a sincere attempt to sit the boy down and let him know, man to man, what he needs to be focusing on to evolve through this mess. I pray Chris takes time out of his busy promotional schedule to read it. But in case Chris has an aversion to reading, another enlightened fella provided this short youtube clip titled simply “A History Lesson for Chris Brown.”

Yep, homeboy pretty much summed it up, didn’t he?

Escape to Sedona…

Those of you that know me, know that there are several places on this planet that I consider my spiritual ‘home away from home’, and the town of Sedona sits right at the top of that list… I tend to escape to Sedona, once or twice a year, for a spiritual recharging and realignment of sorts. The energy here is just magical, and I’ve learned that there are few problems in my life that a little time in Sedona can’t fix. I’ve also made it my mission to shepherd like-minded folk to this magical place whenever possible. Over the years, I have introduced James to the magic of Sedona, and my cousin Dena, and now the Hemphill sisters, Krissy and Kelly.

Overall it was an amazing Girls weekend, and in addition to shooting a little check-in on TPC related stuff, I shot some video of some of my favorite spots in Sedona to give ya’ll a little taste of the magic.

If I’ve inspired any of you to travel there, feel free to hit me up for recommendations on lodging and dining — I literally know this town like the back of my hand, as well as top secret chill spots 😉

He Put a Ring on It :)

Dear Friends, Fans, and Family…

Well, 2010 turned out to be a pretty significant year for me in terms of milestones and initiations. In addition to starting a publishing company, kicking off my freelance editing career, and becoming a published author, I also became engaged. This past August, James asked me to do him the honor of becoming his wife… Yes people, you read that correctly, Stephanie Casher, solo diva extraordinaire, is engaged to be married!

James and I met in July 2006 at the Black Writers Conference in Dallas, and had our first “date” in December of that year. After several years of long-distance love (with him in San Diego and me in Santa Cruz), we transitioned into blissful cohabitation in August of 2009. So far, it’s been going pretty darn good. 🙂 There is no doubt in my mind that James was meant to be my partner in all things, and to tell you the truth, I have considered him my husband, spiritually, for some time. And now we are ready to make it official in the eyes of God, the law, and the IRS, lol.

Of all the things I wanted to be when I grew up, “wife” was never very high on my list. I’m kind of cynical when it comes to marriage, because honestly, I haven’t seen it work for very many people. But when he popped the question during our road trip last summer (took me totally by surprise, by the way), there was not one inch of me that hesitated before saying “Yes.” 🙂 I know without a doubt that this is the man I am supposed to spend the rest of my life with, so while I’m still lukewarm on the labels and completely averse to the idea of having a fancy schmancy wedding, I am thrilled to share this wonderful news with you all… And to someday become Mrs. Stephanie Casher-Lewis and make beautiful brown babies with this amazing man.

Thank you to all our friends and family who came out to our little book release/engagement celebration this weekend… We feel so very blessed to have such loving and supportive folks on our team. And stay tuned for future LewCash collaborations! 🙂

Hold On, It’s going to be a Bumpy Month…

Dear Readers,

I hate to be the one to tell you that we all need to brace ourselves for a bumpy ride as we move through December, as a result of some challenging astrology. Not only do we have Mercury Retrograde to contend with from December 10-30, but we also have a challenging Lunar Eclipse in Gemini on 12/21/10 to add to the mix. Oy!

Mercury retrograde is notorious for causing malfunctions and miscommunications of epic proportions. All things that fall under Mercury’s rule (communication, transportation, travel, technology/electronics) start to short-circuit and break down. Computers crash, car trouble, we lose things, miss our plane/train/bus, have terrible arguments with our loved ones — feel free to blame it all on Mercury Retrograde. Don’t make any major decisions or purchases while Mercury is Retro — when it goes direct, chances are you will second-guess your decision. Information is just too garbled right now. They say the amount of time Mercury spends in retrograde motion corresponds to the amount of time human beings spend asleep. Mercury Retro FORCES us to slow down, even though we’re socialized to “go go go, faster faster.” The best use of a retrograde period is to sync up with the energies… Draw inward, engage in introspection. This is not the time to barrel forward with new initiations, but rather to Review, Reflect, Refine, Reorganize, Reevaluate, etc. In general, anything with a “re” at the beginning of it is a suitable Retrograde activity.

I will refer you to my astrologer of choice, Susan Miller, to read more about what the month has in store for your sign, specifically. (Read for your rising sign, too, if you know what it is!) I also recommend reading what she has to say about Eclipses. An eclipse will always bring us unexpected news and events, with the purpose of moving us forward to the next life stage, quite rapidly in most cases. The goal is to dislodge us when we’re stuck, and get us off that proverbial fence so we can be on to the next… whatever. Patience is key in times like these. So is compassion for those around us, cause we’re all going through it, and not everyone handles stress well. Deep breathing can also help. And as bumpy as December may prove to be, I hear that January will be much better so just hold on! This too shall pass. 🙂

Get it while it’s Hot! ;)

The moment you’ve all been waiting for is finally here… My debut novel, WHEN LOVE ISN’T ENOUGH, is now available for purchase!

PRESS RELEASE
November 22, 2010

In December 2009, three authors joined forces to form The Pantheon Collective (TPC), an independent publishing and author services company. In their first year of operation, the trio successfully published SELLOUT by James W. Lewis (which is getting rave reviews! http://www.amazon.com/dp/0982719302), and is happy to announce the release of its second novel, When Love Isn’t Enough, by Stephanie Casher.

When Love Isn’t Enough, a love story at its core, explores what happens when life and circumstances conspire to interrupt the path of true love. Set in Santa Cruz, CA, with a multicultural cast of characters, this novel tackles the themes of love, friendship, and relating in general. It is a heartbreaking tale of true love, terrible timing, impossible choices, and how you find the strength to go on when you discover that, sometimes, love isn’t enough.

You can read the first three chapters here: http://issuu.com/biglew1971/docs/wl1st3chaps

Stephanie is a freelance editor, publisher, and author of multicultural women’s fiction. This is her debut novel.

PS: Now, through the end of the year, when you purchase an autographed copy of When Love Isn’t Enough ($11 plus shipping), you can get a copy of SELLOUT by James W. Lewis for only $10! A set of books would make great gifts for the book lovers in your life, don’t you think?

WHEN LOVE ISN’T ENOUGH – Update

Well, here we are, late-October, and I’m sure more than a few of you are wondering where the book is, lol. I can assure you, we are almost there. The post-typeset proofread is almost complete, and then we will commence printing. I have to say, it doesn’t quite feel real yet. Actually today, I stumbled upon the WHEN LOVE ISN’T ENOUGH fan page on facebook, that my partner Omar created. It was pretty surreal, cause, wow, that’s MY book. And it has fans! (lol) What can I say, it’s a cool feeling. 🙂

So yes, life is about to get pretty crazy, even crazier than it already is. Let’s recap. I recently received a promotion at my day job, which comes with a whole new set of duties and responsibilities; I’ve taken on a freelance editing project with a Nov 12 deadline; I have to publish, then promote my upcoming novel, which will require interviews, hustling, and a whole lot of time on facebook 😉 ; trips to Vegas and DC have been scheduled in the next two weeks (and just returned from Toronto); and oh yeah, the holidays are around the corner! Man, it is about to get reaaaal interesting up in here.

A normal person might crack under such enormous (albeit self-imposed) pressure, but I am a CAPRICORN woman, and quite frankly, this is what we do. We juggle. We hold it down. We take care of business. We get it done. I have never shied away from hard work, and I’m not about to start now. My to-do list should be afraid, very afraid… 😉

PS: For those of you who were curious about which cover won the WHEN LOVE ISN’T ENOUGH cover contest, it was the yellow cover by an overwhelming margin. Thank you to everyone who voted–the people have spoken!

Funky Astrology…

Most of you would probably agree that these have been a crazy past couple of weeks. Have you experienced sudden and unexpected change(s)? Have you seen the end of a life stage, and beginning of a new one? Have you been arguing with loved ones, or struck by a series of obstacles or frustrations that make you feel like the Universe is conspiring against you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I can assure you that you are not alone. We have ALL been going “through it.” And the culprit, if you choose to believe in such things, is some really funky astrology going on in the skies.

First up, we had two Eclipses in Cancer and Capricorn on June 26th and July 11th. Eclipses tend to bring unexpected events and force confrontations – the goal being to “unstick” you if you are stuck or stagnating. The harder you cling to an inappropriate pattern/person/activity, the more powerful the Eclipses punch to get you moving on to a better place.

I highly recommend reading what Susan Miller has to say about Eclipses. You may find it rather illuminating. I attribute most of the recent craziness to these eclipses, especially if your are a Cancer or Capricorn.

To compound the Eclipse energy, we’ve also had to deal with a Cardinal Cross on August 6-7. A Cardinal Cross is basically when the planets in the sky face off in a series of squares and oppositions. According to Susan Miller:

“What is happening on August 6 and 7 is something we have never seen in our lifetimes and will probably not see happen again…

I Heart Florida…

Well after months of hustlin’, grindin’ and sleep deprivation, I have finally carved out some space to rest. And boy does it feel amazing. I’m on day two of ultra self-indulgence mode, and I already feel like a brand new woman.

After leaving Atlanta last Friday, James and I headed down to Thomasville, Georgia to attend his biannual family reunion. While this was a great time, with some AMAZING food (I swear I’m going to gain 20 lbs before this trip through the South is done, lol), it wasn’t exactly what I’d consider downtime. But after we bid goodbye to the fam on Sunday and headed down to Florida, I could feel my excitement growing. Atlanta had been a James/TPC mission. Thomasville had been a James mission. But Florida, well Florida was going to be all about ME. I couldn’t wait.

We arrived in Jacksonville, Florida Sunday night, for our 4-day visit with James’ cousin Imani, who was gracious enough to host us. When she greeted us with homemade Fried Chicken and greens and I just knew this was going to be an awesome time.

Imani has a beautiful, spacious home and James and I had the whole west wing to ourselves. The most stressful decision I had to ponder was whether or not I wanted to lay out by her pool or hop in the car for a 10 minute ride to the beach. As inviting as her pool is, the beach won every time. 🙂

My kind of vacation...
I’ve always been biased toward the Pacific Ocean, but I think I may have to reconsider that stance. The beaches in Jacksonville, Florida (and all along the Florida coast really) boast not only white sand, but clear blue water that is the PERFECT temperature for swimming. I absolutely love swimming in the ocean, but don’t really get to do it much in Santa Cruz cause the water is too cold. Well believe me when I say I took full advantage of the warm Atlantic waters, and spent several hours every day frolicking in the surf, reading on the beach, and working on my tan. I was in heaven. Wasn’t thinking about work, or TPC, or my to-do list–for three blissful days the hustle was firmly on pause. I’d almost forgotten what it felt like to exist in an obligation-free space…

Thank you Florida, for all you’ve done to take my mind off the craziness that is life. I will be back. 🙂
